I did not see Jose Bautisa do this.
But I heard it on the radio.
As a Bell TV subscriber, I can only get Rogers Sportsnet, the channel that carried the American League divisional series, if I pay an extra $15 a month.
I caught the first seven innings at work, checking the score occasionally while mixing radio ads, and heard the rest of the game on Sirius/XM.
And I kinda liked just hearing the game. It took me back to my childhood when I fired up the transistor radio to catch baseball and hockey games from hundreds of miles away. Detroit, Pittsburgh…
And, true to the radio idea of “theatre of the mind,” I imagined what it was like to be at the Rogers Centre as Russell Martin’s toss back to the mound hit the opponent’s bat and allowed Texas to score the go-ahead run.
I visualized the crowd throwing cups and whatever else on to the field. I also imagined punching those clowns in the face.
With Halloween a few weeks away, it made me think of one of the greatest ghost stories ever filmed, “The Haunting” from 1963.
A classic case of being scared by what you didn’t see, but pictured in your mind. Rent it or stream it this month, it’s well worth it.
That horror classic was remade 30 or so years later and, to quote Stephen King, the update sucked like an Electrolux because it was overloaded with special effects. Our collective imaginations took the night off because the CGI technology hijacked any chance we had of filling in the details with our own unique versions of what lurked the door.
Initially, I was pissed that I couldn’t SEE the deciding game at home.
But I HEARD it. Saw it in my mind. The crack of the bat, the pop of a fastball in the catcher’s mitt.
The ALCS is on Fox, a channel I am paying for. Paying too much but pick & pay is coming, and not a moment too soon.
But for an hour or so, it was fun to hear and feel the game over the airwaves.
