One for the stronger sex

Or should I say, equal? Certainly not weaker.

No, I’ll go back to stronger.

Read the interviews of female musicians and you will invariably come across a quote along the lines of, “Are you carrying your boyfriend’s guitar?” Because she’s a chick or a groupie. Disrespected. And a chick that can play guitar? No way!

Never mind…Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bonnie Raitt, Liona Boyd, Ellen McEllwaine, Lita Ford and the ladies that played with Michael Jackson and Prince, respectively, Oranthi and Donna Grantis.

The young lady above is Janis Martin. Billed as the female Elvis in 1956 by RCA Records. Married at 15, pregnant a year later and RCA dropped her when they found out. I play her songs on my radio show.

Never mind that playing notes and chords requires dexterity as opposed to strength… and that brings us to President Hillary Clinton.

Oh right. She was regarded as not strong enough, physically or mentally, to be commander in chief. But a 70-year-old male was. Future generations are going to look back at the 2016 election and say, “Seriously, people made such a big deal about emails?”

A few years ago, an American radio consultant told country stations that if they wanted big ratings they should limit the amount of female artists on the playlist. The likes of Miranda Lambert are, in his words, the tomatoes in the salad. Brad, Dierks, Keith, Eric, Toby, Blake and Cletus are the lettuce. Okay, I made Cletus up. Though if Cletus sang, “get your hands off my truck unless you brought beer”…..

To my ears, the tomatoes make better music, and have the bigger voices. Carrie, keep up the great work. Same with you, Miranda and Kacey.

Many of my favourite writers are female. I’m in the middle of “Dark Places” by Gillian Flynn, author of “Gone Girl.” Highly recommended. And then again, whether it’s a response to a newspaper column or a Facebook post written by someone not male, the comments are often condescending, as if the guy is really saying, “Hey, little lady, leave politics to the men.”

Which brings is back to Hillary Clinton. Trump is 70, Sanders is even older. That’s experience, they say. But a woman of comparable age?

“Hey Grandma, why do you want to be president? Shouldn’t you be home baking cookies and knitting sweaters?”
