Disagreeing with people you like
It would be easy for me to call Ted Nugent an idiot, racist or nutjob. And he may be all that and a bag of (American made) chips.
And, as a liberal-minded person…though, not a Liberal Party supporter because I would never align myself 100% with the policies of one party (how could you, no matter what your allegiances?)…it sounds like Mr. Cat Scratch Fever thinks that any “Liberal/Democrat” is fucked in the head.
Spin Cat Scratch Fever, Stranglehold or Ted’s Amboy Dukes psychedelic trip, Journey to the Centre of the Mind, and I am in my glory.
Firing up the air guitar. Cat Scratch Fever is up there with Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” in that category.
So i’m trying to strike the balance between music I really like and a guy who apparently wants to shoot me with his crossbow because I dare oppose his views.
Is he wrong? No.
Am I right, or wrong? No.
It’s his opinion…captital “O.” My opinion. Your opinion.
You have a right to express it, but respect mine.
DO NOT try to convert me.
DO NOT post a link that supports your views, attacks the other side and has a tone along the lines of, “Read this! Get a clue! You are on the wrong side of this issue.”
Unfriend me. In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, go take a flying fuck at a rolling donut.
You know what smart people do?
They read. Not just “Conservatives/Liberals suck.com” but a variety of sources. If you’re a “liberal” don’t be afraid to click on a Toronto Sun link (likewise with conseratives and the Star).
The “truth” does not come from like-minded pundits but from your ability to reason, to find a middle ground, to know facts rather than relying on someone’s distorted or limited assessment.
If it’s from the New York Times, Guardian (from the city of my birth, Manchester), Washington Post, Globe & Mail, give it some credibilty. They employ top-notch reporters who do what the twits on Fox News don’t…they reseach and ask questions. To paraphrase the great journalist H.L Mencken, it’s a newspaper’s job to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.
If your source is “conspiracy.com” or some blog written by a person the rest of us have never heard of, well…expect to be ignored.
Millions…me included…sought out the movie reviews of the late, great Roger Ebert. If Roger liked it, maybe I would as well, but I am less likely to to watch a film because some website recommended it.
Again, it’s all about credibility.
I’d willingly let Ted Nugent teach me to play Great White Buffalo. That would be cool.
But, political views from the Motor City Madman? Show me your library, Ted, and I may listen but you haven’t written a tune worth paying attention to in over 30 years so, what gives you any kind of credibility?
Other than being a celebrity. Like Trump.
Then again, that’s the problem with the Amercian media and what is deemed newsworthy. Sound bites, instead of substance (who has time to do homework?) Colour, not content. A 15-second clip with no substance.
But I will end this with a nod to Ted. Check out Youtube and Nugent’s song with a then unknown singer named Marvin Lee Aday, aka Meatloaf.
If Ted or The Donald wants to send us back wherever we came from, okay, book my plane ticket to Manchester. Or Cork, Ireland.
Because, really, whose opinion matters most to you? Someone who has spent years and years to gain an understanding…you know, read shit and formed a view based on facts…
or the guy who gave us,
“Got you in a strangehold baby, that night I crushed your face.”
