In 1979, the artist we’ve come to know as Madonna left her small town in Michigan to pursue a career in dancing in New York City.
She had $35 in her pocket and had never taken a plane ride or even a taxi ride. Madonna Louise Ciccone worked at Dunkin Donuts and found work as a backup dancer. Her road to stardom was a long one and Madonna was hardly an overnight success.
She worked her ass off.
The internet is full of social media “experts” who have the secret to making big bucks. Somehow they know something others don’t in terms of working from home, kissing your boss goodbye and jumping ahead of the pack to have the career you crave.
And it’s all bullshit.
There is no secret. No shortcut. They may have mastered the art of bullshit but many consultants are con artists. They make money doing your job and if you actually did your homework you could uncover the same “secrets.”
Malcolm Gladwell has written many books and one of his most famous theories is the 10,000 hour idea. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to be good, let alone great, at anything.
In “The Outliers” Gladwell used The Beatles as an example. They spent that much time playing beer halls and strip joints in Germany, and The Cavern Club in Liverpool, honing their chops and becoming a great band, rocking hours and hours a day and covering Chuck Berry, Little Richard and scores of other American rockers.
Aside from Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, American Idol has not given us many idols. It’s not a shorcut to success and neither are The Voice and America’s Got Talent.
And speaking of the latter, judge Howard Stern slugged it out for many years before he became the King of All Media.
Youtube, Soundcloud and the rest have given us the false promise of instant success and while Rebecca Black and Psy enjoyed brief popularity, long-term success requires commitment, determination and talent.
I’m not a big Madonna fan but she made it through hard work and attitude.
I haven’t made it big but I’m still plugging away, trying to solve the puzzle and hoping someone pays attention and if you’ve made it this far…
